The first purple crow butterflies has arrived in Maolin, and the tourism industry is ready to receive visitors

2020-10-07

Autumn has just begun, and around 4,000 purple crow butterflies have landed in Purple Crow Butterfly Valley, Maolin District, Kaohsiung City. Maolin National Scenic Area Administration will hold a series of events in support of the 2020-2021 Season of Purple Crow Butterflies in Maolin, too, for domestic visitors to enjoy the beauty of the butterflies.
To attract the upcoming visitors, this year’s butterfly season highlights a few indigenous Rukai themes, in addition to butterflies. Such include Maoin, Wanshan and Duona tribal tours, as well as traditional indigenous lifestyle and food. For backpackers to feel the charm of the tribes, by the end of October, a VR adventure and puzzle game on the aforementioned three tribes will be available. Visitors can access the game via LINE@ and learn about the tribes’ culture, including legends and ceremonies.
As to transport, every year, the butterfly season draws huge crowds to Maolin. Travelling by car can however result in more air pollution, let alone that parking can be a problem. Public transport is thus an ideal option - all visitors are encouraged to take Kaohsiung Bus H31 (Qishan-Duona), which is available both on weekdays and weekends/holidays. In fact, H31 on weekends and holidays provides six more rides per day from October 17 to February 28 the next year during the butterfly season. If you want to avoid the pressure that comes with driving, do explore Maolin by bus. Relax and feast your eyes with views of green forests along the way.
