Shuizun Engong Shrine

The Shuizunen Public Shrine is located around the 13km mark of Provincial Highway No. 27-A. The shrine was built to commemorate Huang Xian-Ren, a Chinese immigrant, and his contribution to the local community. Originally from Haifeng County in Guangdong Province, Huang moved to Xinwei Village in Taiwan in 1853. He noticed that the village and the adjacent Erpo District lacked irrigation systems, so the locals could only farm on dry land. Feeling the need to address that problem, Huang rode on cattle’s back to Erpo and started digging an irrigation channel himself, aiming to direct water from Laonong River to Erpo. He eventually completed the channel with the help of villagers, and water was brought via the passage to irrigate over 1,900 m2 of land in Xinwei, leading to increased food production.


The villagers of Xinwei then named the irrigation channel Xianren-zun to acknowledge Huang’s contribution and built a shrine to commemorate him.

Visitors are recommended to spend about 10 minutes here to offer their prayers at the shrine.
