The Slate Stone Alley can be found in the Wutai Tribe. As its name shows, the alley is paved with slate stones. The 500-meter alley mimics the way a Deinagkistrodon slithers and is decorated with clay pots on both sides. Traveling on the alley, visitors can follow road signs decorated with lily, Deinagkistrodon, and clouded leopard totems, as if they were on an adventure.
Houses along the alley features symbols showing their owners' social status, such as human sculptures at their doorsteps and decorations of all kinds on their upper door frames and walls. From those features, you can tell if the house owner is a civilian, a hunter, an elder, or a tribal chief.
Relief sculptures on the walls of the alley also offer visitors a glimpse into Lukai culture. The sculptures tell stories of the tribe, featuring women weaving clothes, elders with wrinkles all over their faces, young and energetic tribal heroes, and hunters cheerfully showing their trophies from a successful hunt. The sculptures also allow visitors to admire Lukai people’s creativity.
Visitors are recommended to spend an hour here. Please note that a permit is required to enter Wutai Township and that larger vehicles such as trucks and tour buses are prohibited from entering the region.
