Introduction
You will see the Strength and Endurance Challenge of the most famous hiking and mountain climbing path of southern Taiwan. Head towards the training facility at Weiliaoshan to test your limits and show your strength and endurance. Finally, while taking a walk within beautiful mountain forests, you may gaze at the grand sight of mountains and clouds and feel the balance between activeness and stillness.
DAY 1
Maolin Valley/ Lumusu Creek Trail
Lumusu is a word in the indigenous Lukai language, meaning “a beautiful valley.” The trail is 4 km long, but only the first 1.2 km is open to the public. Walking along the trail, you can appreciate the scenery along the way, including lush forests and green mountains, fluttering butterflies, and a gurgling river at the bottom of the valley, which is a tributary of the Zhuokou River. After reaching the end of a bamboo corridor, you will see the Maolin Valley Waterfall.
Duona Village's Stone Slab Houses
The Douna Slate Stone House Hub can be found in the Douna Village in Maolin District. It is a specialty of the Paiwan tribe, whose people built slate stone houses together using slate stones collected directly from the Wenquan River nearby. While the body of the house is usually built with slates of lighter shades, which are susceptible to corrosion by wind and rain, the floor and roof are usually made from heavier slates of darker shades, which are more resilient than light-colored slates. In addition, some slate stone houses feature Deinagkistrodon totems on the top or sides of the door, which signifies the owner’s social status, which is either a tribal chief or a highborn.
DAY 2
Maolin Visitor Center
Maolin Visitor Center has tourist consultation service counters, smart-touch guide walls, interactive large TV walls, multimedia audio-visual rooms, nursing rooms, prayer rooms, and book crossing stations to provide more complete and comprehensive recreational service functions. The recommended stay time is about one hour. You can make an appointment to watch an immersive video or ask for an introduction to the scenic area's tourist resources in the visitor center.
Zishalishali Trail
The Zishalishali Trail sits in the Maolin Eco Park and can be accessed by the butterfly-sighting trail in the park. The whole trail is 3.7 kilometers long, and it takes 50 minutes to walk through it. However, only the first 2.1 kilometers in the Maolin Eco Park is open to the public. The trail is also part of an important migration destination for purple crow butterflies in winter, in addition to having an abundance of bird and insect species.
